MONROE TOWNSHIP ESL PROGRAM
The Monroe Township ESL Program includes students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.
The classes are taught by Karen Berecsky at Woodland/Brookside School, Tamar Lopez at Barclay Brook, Maureen Jones at
Oak Tree, Nidia DeOliveria at Oak Tree/Applegarth, Onyai Glover at Monroe Township Middle School/Monroe Township High School Diana Kaiser at Monroe Township High School and Nawon Park at Mill Lake.
Students who enter the Monroe schools speaking primarily a language other than English
may be in need of additional assistance in learning English and in maintaining progress in
the regular program.
Monroe has an English as a Second Language (ESL) program for English Language Learners.
(ELLs) are available in all grades, K-12. In order to determine which students need to be placed in
the ELL program, a language test is given within the school. Children who qualify receive
specialized daily instruction in all aspects of English: understanding, speaking, reading, and
writing, which will better prepare them for their school careers and their life in the United
States. A letter is sent home advising parents of this opportunity; however, they have the
right to refuse these services. Students receive one daily period of ELL instruction. The focus
of the ELL program is to teach students to understand, speak, read, and write English.
The ELL teachers also teach content area vocabulary and concepts within the ELL classrooms.
